FreePOPs (ver 0.2.9) Abandoned Freeware FreePOPs is a special gateway interface, that allows you to "capture" mail from a WebMail system, using POP3. FreePOPs can optionally be run as a Windows "Service". It is similar to the popular "YPOPs" software, but it is more stable (YPOPs 'times-out' a lot) and it supports multiple systems other than just Yahoo Mail. Although it allows you to read your mail without the need to open an Internet Browser, its real advantage is that you can use it to backup your email on a WebMail system (such as Yahoo Mail) that normally does NOT provide a way to backup your emails. FreePOPs runs on your computer, and connects to your WebMail account (such as Yahoo Mail) through its own special Internet interface. You then use a POP3 Client (such as Outlook Express), which is also running on your computer, to locally connect to the FreePOPs gateway. Unlike typical email systems (which use Port 25), FreePOPs requires access to Port 2000. You can only download mail (there is no method to send mail back up through FreePOPs). Sending mail can still be done through your normal WebMail browser interface, or if available from your WebMail provider, via your WebMail systems SMTP or IMAP server. ---------- With FreePOPs running, add a new "Outlook Express" email account -> E-mail address: [YOUR-YAHOO-ID@yahoo.com] Password: [YOUR-YAHOO-PASSWORD] [CHECKMARK] Remember password Display Name: [YOUR-YAHOO-EMAIL-NAME] [CHECKMARK] Manually configure server settings for e-mail account. My incoming mail server is a [POP3] server. Incoming server: [localhost] Port: [2000] Log on using: [Clear text authentication] Login ID (if different from e-mail address): [YOUR-YAHOO-ID@yahoo.com] NOTE: The POP3 protocol can not access mail in custom folders. If you are storing your email messages in separate folders, you must first move them into your "Inbox", before they can be backed up by FreePOPs. A simple solution is to download all your Inbox messages, then (using the normal Browser interface) move all the messages into a temporary folder. Now move the email messages from one of your custom folders into the empty Inbox, so they can also be downloaded (it is a good idea to move the messages out of your POP3 Client prior to downloading the next batch of emails). Repeat as necessary until you have downloaded all of your emails (don't forget about the email in your "Sent mail" folder).
