Rdex (ver 1.5.6) Freeware Microsoft no longer adds a "cardfile" applet of the sort available in Windows 3.x. Surprisingly, there are almost no examples of freeware replacements, and most that exist are in many ways less capable. Rdex is a freeform indexcard database, which will store any pure text (essentially, it is a collection of "notepad" pages). Just click "New Card," copy and paste (or type in) some info and click save. Afterwards, you can search for any text contained in the card, and cards with that text (highlighted) will be consecutively displayed. You can also list the first lines of all the cards in the database (very useful if you use the first line as an index of the individual cards contents). Unfortunately, the cards are listed in their creation order, and cannot be sorted alphabetically. Rdex consists of one executable file, which you can place anywhere on your computer. The database is a single file with an ".rdx" extension. You can create multiple databases, but you can only open one at a time. Databases can be saved anywhere. WARNING: The newest versions of Rdex allow the option of saving a database as an encrypted AES-128 format file. This is -NOT- possible in Win2k (but other formats work fine).
