As the Internet has evolved, new Protocols have been developed which duplicate the function of older Protocols. However bear in mind that a Protocol is just a methodology, a way of doing something, and thus an older Protocol will continue to function just as capably as it did back in the day when the Protocol was "popular" (usage, or lack thereof, has zero effect). This fact can be especially handy when a deplorable entity is restricting/blocking a currently popular Protocol (such as HTTP), as using the older Protocol as an alternative can allow you to continue being productive with your endeavor (such as following/making news reports).

NOTES:
The Protocols CharGen, Discard, Echo, and QOTD can all be initiated using a VT100 terminal emulator.
The Email system uses SMTP for uploading, POP or IMAP for regular downloading, and Distribute for subscription downloading. Reading or writing are performed offline.
Gopher and HTTP/HTTPS do not require a separate Protocol (e.g., Archie / Nicname / WAIS) to query an online resource database (such as: Veronica / Google) for their Protocol.
The *public hosts* are being listed for testing purposes only. Because some listed hosts may no longer be active, you are encouraged to regularly seek more relevant hosts.

It is a sorry state of affairs that for profiteering reasons websites using the HTTP Protocol are returning to the bad-old-days of only working with certain brands and version numbers of Browsers. For Windows 2000 users, this effectively means that a replacement Browser will have to be acquired approximately every 9 months.
